What is Pilates? Pilates is a body conditioning exercise that targets the deep postural muscles. Joseph Pilates. Joseph Pilates was born in Germany and began to develop his exercise system in the early 1900's. He was a sickly child suffering from asthma and rickets. He began to develop his system to strengthen his sick and weak body. He named his technique 'The art of contrology' or muscle control, to highlight the approach of using the mind to master the muscles.

Individual instruction is developed around an initial assessment and allows you to gradually strengthen any highlighted areas. Pilates is also used as a form of rehabilitation for a wide range of ailments as many clients are referred by doctors, osteopaths and physiotherapists who have discovered the benefits of Pilates. Many actors, athletes and sports teams have also realized the benefit and now use Pilates regularly as part of their training.
